LONDON, UK – The
International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) is convening a global review of tailings storage facility management, standards and critical controls. Work is to start immediately.
The review will be led by ICMM and include external experts and member company representatives. It will focus on surface tailings management across the membership, including a review of standards, critical control strategies, governance and emergency preparedness.
The timing of the review is too late to be of help to those killed or affected by the failure of the dam at the Samarco iron ore mine in Brazil last month. The project is jointly owned by
BHPBilliton and
Vale. The Brazilian government is suing the owners for US$5.2 billion in compensation.
The ICMM review will build on existing knowledge, becoming a resource not only for its members but for the global mining community.
