ONTARIO – The Coleman nickel-copper mine near Sudbury, owned by
Vale Canada, will remain closed until the middle of next month. The owner suspended operations on Nov. 13, 2017, due to safety concerns.
Originally, the work was to be completed in December, but that deadline was later pushed forward to the end of January, and now repairs will continue perhaps four more weeks.
When the suspension was announced, Vale transferred more than 200 production and maintenance workers to temporarily work at other mines. For employees who are idled, the company is topping up their EI benefits through a supplemental unemployment benefits plan.
