ONTARIO — Toronto-based Xstrata Nickel has decided to suspend mining indefinitely at its Montcalm nickel mine near Timmins because of poor ground conditions and safety issues.

Mining stopped at the end of March following rockbursts. A recent geotechnical review showed structural damage to the mine.

The Montcalm mine was to produce approximately 9,000 tonnes of nickel in concentrate this year. Its mine life was scheduled to end in mid-2011. The impact of actions at Montcalm to production from the Copper Cliff smelter at Sudbury are expected to be substantially offset as the smelter continues to process concentrate from Xstrata's Raglan and Australasian operations, initial ore from Nickel Rim South and third party feed sources.
