ONTARIO – The first layoffs – 26 of them last week – have begun at the Lockerby nickel-copper mine 30 km west of Sudbury. The owner, First Nickel of Toronto, announced last month that lower metal prices were forcing it to suspend development of the ramp in the mine.
According to a report in NorthernLife.ca, more layoffs can be expected as the company moves the project to care and maintenance or closure in November. In the meantime the remaining ore above the 6,800 level will be mined.
First Nickel has no other producing mines. Visit FNMining.com/.
