SEATTLE, Washington - The INTERNATIONAL BOREAL CONSERVATION CAMPAIGN (IBCC) has released its report on "Mining Exploration Conflicts in Canada's Boreal Forest." The report and accompanying maps give for the first time an overview of the extent to which mining claims conflict with aboriginal rights, private landowners, conservation, wildlife and other uses.
The IBCC blames outdated mining laws and our system of "free entry mining." Mineral rights are granted to prospectors without prior consultation with the communities affected by exploration, and perhaps development. The report calls for fundamental legislative and industry reform so that current conflicts can be resolved and future ones prevented.
The report may be downloaded as a .pdf file at www.InterBoreal.org by clicking on the "Conflicts in the Boreal" link.
