Members of the Kimberley Process have determined that diamonds from Zimbabwe's Marange area were mined and processed without regard to human rights. Members then sent monitors to the region and set a deadline to correct the problems rather than invoking sanctions on all diamonds mined in Zimbabwe. Was this the right action?

Last week: A week ago we asked our readers if they know and practice their employer's CSR (corporate social responsibility) policy. Disappointingly few of them responded. There were only nine, five of whom said they worked in head offices and answered "yes" to the question. Only one reader at a mine site said he (or she) knows and practices CSR. Two readers said "no" and indicated they work at a mine site. It is time for all miners to make sure their CSR policy is widely known and practiced.
