ONTARIO – Kirkland Lake Gold has decided to use its own employees rather than contractors for the development of its South mine complex (SMC) in Kirkland Lake. This decision reverses a previous announcement made at the end of October 2008.
Brian Hinchcliffe, CEO, explained, “Increasing production levels, particularly from the high grade SMC remains a priority for us. When we first committed to this project, skilled underground labour was in high demand, and we planned to utilize outside mining contractors to provide a workforce in that environment. Today, skilled underground labour has become much more available, and a lower cost development program can be carried out by expanding our own workforce.”
KLGold says production from the SMC is expected to increase gold output to more than 100,000 oz/year beginning in March 2009. The project will be completed in July 2010.
The detailed mine plan is to be completed next month. Visit www.KLgold.com for the news.
