CHILE DIVISION NORTE of CODELCO, the Chilean national copper mining company, has awarded INVENSYS SYSTEMS CHILE a US$2-million contract to provide a state-of-the-art Foxboro electric distribution SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system at the company's Chuquicamata mining complex. Chuquicamata is one of the largest and most modern copper mines in the world and accounts for more than 70% of Codelco's total copper production.
As part of a complete electric SCADA solution for the mine, Invensys is also retrofitting the controls at 26 electric substations utilizing the latest Foxboro RTU (remote terminal unit) technology and implementing a comprehensive suite of energy management system and distribution management system applications.
This represents the second major Foxboro electric SCADA system that Invensys Chile (a unit of Invensys Process Systems) has implemented for Codelco in recent years. The earlier project, for Codelco's El Teniente division, is in the final stages of installation.
