Derek Pannell assumes the role of CEO of Noranda Inc. on June 1, replacing former CEO David Kerr; Pannell will remain president of Noranda. Kerr will continue as executive chairman of the company. Pannell will give up his title of COO of Noranda as well as his positions as president and CEO of Falconbridge Ltd., which is controlled by Noranda, but will be appointed deputy chairman of Falconbridge. Aaron Regent will be appointed president and CEO of Falconbridge; he was formerly the executive vice-president and CFO at Noranda. Lars-Eric Johannson becomes the executive vice-president and CFO at Noranda, and will give up his position of CFO at Falconbridge as soon as a replacement can be found.
Kinross Gold Corp. of Toronto has named Scott Caldwell as president and COO, replacing Art Ditto, who has been named vice-chairman. Caldwell was previously vice-president of operations.
Scott Jobin-Bevans has been appointed vice-president, exploration for Vancouver-based Pacific North West Capital Corp.; he will be based in Sudbury. In his new position, he will be responsible for the company’s exploration projects including the River Valley and Agnew Lake programs near Sudbury, both funded by Anglo American Platinum Corp. Ltd.
Canabrava Diamond Corp. of Vancouver has appointed George H. Read as president and CEO, effective June 1, replacing Dr. Rory O. Moore. Read has been the company’s vice-president exploration for the last year, and has over 18 years of international experience in the diamond industry, including 12 years with De Beers. Moore will continue to assist Canabrava as a consultant.
Samantha Espley, superintendent of mining methods and mine design in the Department of Mines Technology at Inco Ltd., has been appointed as an external advisor on research and educational activities to the Laurentian University Mining Automation Laboratory (LUMAL). Espley is a mineral resources engineer with 14 years of experience in hardrock mining. Her Mines Technology team at Inco seeks innovative solutions and business strategies in mining methods and mine design, with a focus on implementing breakthroughs in backfilling, mine design, drilling/blasting and process simulations.
Walter Segsworth has been appointed to the board of directors of Cumberland Resources Ltd., based in Vancouver. Segsworth is a mining engineer with 30 years of experience in the mining industry. He was most recently president and COO of Homestake Mining Co., and before that was president and CEO of Westmin Resources Ltd. He has also held senior operating positions at several Canadian mines including Golden Giant and Bell Copper.
Inmet Mining Corp. of Toronto has appointed Oyvind Hushovd, former president and CEO of Falconbridge Ltd., as a director of the corporation.
