Big Beyond Belief
Mine trucks are without question some of the most mind-boggling, man-made creations on earth. It can be argued they don’t compare in size with high-rise buildings, bridges, dams, or other structures, but given an up-close look and most will agree that off-road haulers are almost Big Beyond Belief.
The size of the vehicles, and especially the tires that support them, is intimidating to say the least and when on board one of those monsters and you witness the brute power they possess, it soon becomes clear that few other things on earth are as awesome in stature.
Capacities, too, are in weights and volumes that can only be believed when wit-nessed first hand. Payloads in excess of 300 tons being moved in trucks powered by 20-cylinder engines producing upwards of 4000 horsepower (average car is about 200 hp) can only be appreciated when seen in action. Unfortunately, that action takes place in isolated places where only a few people will ever go… deep in the hearts of the world’s open-pit mines.
Because of the enormity of both the mines and in particular, the trucks that work within them, watching a haul truck in action is still somewhat of a novelty to most people so to give you a bit of a peak at what goes on deep within the open-pit mines of the world, Canadian Mining Journal is pleased to show you some of the world’s biggest and best trucks in action.
