Professional Geoscientists Ontario: 2022 Virtual Symposium
April 28, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 12:30 pm
Session D: Sustainability and Climate Change – Embracing New Opportunities for Geoscience
As stated by the Bank of Canada in January 2022 “Climate change poses significant risks to the financial system and the economy. These include disruptions from more frequent and severe extreme weather events as well as risks stemming from the transition to a low-carbon, net-zero economy.” The financial risks, and consequences for health and wellbeing, are significant for Canada. However, there are also opportunities for geoscience professionals to play an active role in addressing both climate change and wider sustainability issues, within the evolving economy. This session will provide attendees with insight into sustainability assessment and performance, sustainable finance, and climate action in relation to the practice of geoscience, as well as examples of steps they can take to embrace the opportunities available.
Speakers:
Ben Chalmers (Mining Association of Canada) – Towards Sustainable Mining
Sean Cleary (Institute for Sustainable Finance, Smith School of Business, Queen’s University) – Climate Change and Sustainable Finance
Joanna Eyquem (Managing Director, Climate-Resilient Infrastructure, Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation) – Climate Adaptation – Enhancing Natural Climate Resilience
Harshan Radhakrishnan (Manager, Climate Change and Sustainability Initiatives, EGBC) – EGBC’s Climate Change Action Plan – Lessons Learnt and Action Going Forward
