Open Pit Slope Design and Implementation
July 26, 2016 - July 27, 2016
This course presents an overview of the process for the design and management of slopes in open pit mines. Starting with a description of the information required to support a slope design and the methods of data collection, it progresses to the design procedures for bench configurations, inter-ramp slopes and overall slopes, including the analytical procedures commonly in use. Specific examples of design will be presented and discussed in the class to illustrate the factors that could affect pit slope stability.
The implementation of the designs will be discussed in terms of both the operating procedures for mining and optimizing the stability of pit slopes. The aspects of risk associated with pit slope design and excavation will be presented. Monitoring methods for pit slopes and other management procedures will be discussed. Participants will be encouraged to present a short (max 30 min.) presentation for discussion in the course.
