VANCOUVER – CG Industrial Specialties called for the Manufacturers Standardization Society (MSS) to officially adopt the "severe service valve" as a new category specific designation, to increase quality assurance for mission critical applications. Ross Waters, CGIS president and CEO, made the announcement during his presentation to the Valve World Americas Expo and Conference in Houston, Texas, on July 16, 2015.

“Severe service values should not fail regardless of how extreme the conditions,” says Waters. “That is the expectation of the public in granting industry a social license to operate in their community.  Industry must live up to that expectation, and that is why a specific severe service valve category is so important,” adds Waters.

The severe service category would clearly define the design criteria, and the material and manufacturing specifications, for any value operating in severe conditions including extreme heat, cold and pressure or subject to highly abrasive, erosive, corrosive, explosive or flammable materials. Manufacturers would be required to meet the specifications in order to qualify for the severe service category, and end users would be required to use the proper valves for all severe service applications.

Throughout the next year, Waters will be making presentations at conferences and to industry organizations promoting the designation. He proposes the MSS, an ANSI accredited standards developer, establish a technical committee to develop the parameters, specifications and standards for severe service valves and that the MSS board of directors formally adopt the designation at the MSS annual meeting next year.
