AUSTRALIA — Global packaging manufacturer Amcor of Melbourne has offered to acquire from Rio Tinto parts of Alcan Packaging for approximately US$2 billion. The offer includes Alan Packaging Global Pharmaceuticals, Alcan Packaging Food Europe, Alcan Packaging Food Asia and Alcan Packaging Global Tobacco.

 

The Alcan businesses included in the deal generated revenues of US$4.1 billion in 2008. For the first six months of 2009, they generated revenues of US$1.8 billion. They employed 14,000 people at 80 locations in 28 countries.

Rio Tinto previously sold Alcan Packaging Food Americas to Bemis Co. for US$1.2 billion. The remaining beauty packaging division will be divested separately, said Rio Tinto.
