As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO; ASX: RIO; LSE: RIO) is supporting organizations that work to prevent domestic violence and accompany victims in Canada.

The 16 Days is an annual event supported by the United Nations and Canada’s federal government. The period kicked off on Nov. 25 and will conclude on Dec. 10, which is Human Rights Day.

Rio Tinto is contributing $355,000 to 14 organizations that provide shelters, counselling, education and training, workshops and activities for women, children and the LGBTQ+ community. The company will also organize activities for its employees to raise their awareness of the various facets of domestic violence. Their employees will hear the stories of survivors, talk with representatives of local organizations, and learn how to recognize the signed of violence so that they can better help those around them.

“As a major employer in Canada, we have an important role to play in raising awareness of domestic violence through supporting the invaluable work of community organizations and taking action ourselves,” said Rio Tinto Aluminum chief executive Ivan Vella. “Rio Tinto has developed its own training program and we have  also implemented measures to support employees experiencing violence and their family members, including access to paid leave, 24 hours support services, short-term financial assistance and emergency  accommodation.”

The company’s donation will go toward supporting organizations in Newfoundland, Quebec, British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories.
