Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) is investing $750,000 over three years to support research and training for the Rail Centre of Excellence at the CEGEP de Sept-Ȋles, Que.
IOC has worked closely with the school for several years, providing equipment used to train students. The company has donated a train-handling simulator and will continue by providing signalling equipment, switch motors, two rail cars, and track detectors. Estimated value of these donations is more than $850,000.
IOC and the Rail Centre of Excellence are also working together in the areas of technical assistance and applied research. Such projects involve innovative technologies for heavy transportation and preventive maintenance protocols.
“At IOC, rail transport has always been an integral part of our operations. By getting involved in the development of the CEGEP de Sept-Îles’ Rail Centre of Expertise, IOC has three major goals in mind: to improve the safety, reliability and productivity of our operations; to facilitate the training, recruitment and retention of qualified employees; and to contribute to the economic vitality of the North Shore,” said IOC general manager of rail, port and energy José Riopel.

Having lived in Sept-Iles from 1966 to 1980 and worked for Wabush Mines at Pointe-Noire, Quebec, I am very familiar with the important role of QNS&L Railway and Arnaud Railway. I am very pleased to learn that IOC has decided to contribute $850,00 for the Rail Centre of Excellence.
