Teck Resources is rolling out a pair of electric buses to transport workers to and from the Fording River and Greenhills coal mines in the Elk Valley. The new vehicles are a much greener solution to the diesel-powered buses they replace.

Teck says that as far as it knows this is the first time electric passenger buses have been used for employee transport in the Canadian mining industry.
The benefits of the new electric buses are threefold: 1) The reduction of greenhouse gases is equal to taking 10 gasoline-powered cars off the road; 2) The operating costs are about only 50% compared to standard diesel buses over a 10- to 12-year lifespan; and 3) Their quieter operation will be enjoyed not only by passengers but by communities along the bus routes.
Since 2011, Teck has implemented projects to reduce GHG emissions at its operations by 289,000 tonnes – the equivalent of taking over 88,000 conventional automobiles off the road. What is learned from the first two electric buses is expected to eventually lead to more electric passenger vehicles.
Teck was named the top mining company on the 2019 Dow Jones Sustainability Index. Read more at

I am an employee at Highland Valley Copper mine. I currently carpool to work. There are over 1200 employees at Highland Valley Copper mine. We drive an hour to and from work. And after a 10 or 12 hour shift it’s difficult to stay alert at the wheel on the highway. I also strongly believe in reducing carbon emissions. That is why I am excited to see that Teck is too. By bringing electric buses to their Elk Valley mines. I would hope that those buses are also going to make their way to Highland Valley Copper mine. As it would greatly reduce the carbon footprint as well as the safety of all the employees and other drivers on the road.
