ZINC-COPPER: Nyrstar puts Langlois mine on care and maintenance

(Image: Nyrstar)[/caption] QUEBEC – Swiss mining company Nyrstar is putting its Langlois zinc-copper mine 50 km northeast of Lebel-sur-Quevillon on care and maintenance. Production will conclude before the end of this year. The company said that rock conditions at the mine have deteriorated to the point that continued mining is not economical. The decision affects about 240 jobs at the mine. Nyrstar is discussing the details with the local unions representing its employees. Some workers will be offered positions at the company’s Myra Falls zinc-copper mine 90 km from Campbell River, B.C. Those who cannot find new positions with the company will be offered outplacement services. Equipment from Langlois will be moved to Nyrstar’s other two mines – Myra Falls and its three zinc mines in Tennessee. The company also operates a smelter at Clarksville, Tenn., about 400 km away.
