(Image: Sandvik)[/caption] OTTAWA – Last week Natural Resources Canada announced that it is giving $2 million to the Canadian Mining Innovation Council to develop energy efficient mining technology. The goal is to reduce energy use at mine sites, cut costs, and make remote mines more productive. The most energy intensive process at mine sites is crushing and grinding. The funding will go toward testing technology to replace conventional crushers and reduce energy use by 50% and costs by up to 30%. CMIC executive director and CEO Carl Weatherell said, “The government of Canada's commitment to innovation through the Clean Growth Program and Crush It! Challenge has been a key catalyst for kick-starting two CMIC led projects that are poised to transform the mining industry by significantly reducing energy consumption in mining.” For more information on projects undertaken by CMIC, click here+.
