SUDBURY, Ont. – The
Goodman School of Mines at Laurentian University wants to hear from geologists, engineers and environmental scientists. The availability of seasoned professionals who are ready to fill these roles as Baby Boomers retire will not meet demand. A concerning gap is being created.
The worry is that these roles will be filled by less experienced people. They will not have had the experience, learned skills and behaviours to perform well in these positions.
To ensure the sustainability and quality of mining industry professionals, researchers from Laurentian University in Canada and James Cook University in Australia are conducting a study to identify the skill, competency and behavioural gaps felt by mining professionals. The study's goal is to develop a self-assessment tool to indicate the knowledge and training that they should acquire and partnerships with educational providers to offer hybrid programming that meets the needs of the industry.
However, in order to complete the study, the Goodman School of Mines needs geologists, engineers and environmental scientists in mining to fill out an 8-10 minute survey.
