GOLD: Parsons wins cleanup contract for Giant mine

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES – The government of Canada has awarded the main construction management contract for the clean-up of the Giant gold mine in Yellowknife to Parsons Inc. [caption id="attachment_1003722102" align="alignleft" width="300"] The federal remediation plan for the former Giant gold mine will also provide jobs. GOVERNMENT OF CANADA[/caption] Parsons will complete the required work over two phases. First, the company will undertake site care and maintenance and address emerging risks. It will also plan the permanent remediation that will be undertaken in phase two for the site. The first phase will cost up to $32 million. Work will start immediately and continue until the end of March 2020. Then beginning in 2020, Parsons will oversee the execution of the remediation plan and associated activities. The cost of this second phase will be determined after the plan has been engineered during phase one. The government believes this part of the work will provide employment and economic development opportunities for Indigenous people. There has been surface disturbance for buildings, waste rock storage and tailings management while the Giant mine was active from 1948 through 1999. During that time 7.0 million oz. of gold was produced and 237,000 tonnes of arsenic trioxide containing dust were accumulated and placed in the underground workings.
