NORTHWEST TERRITORIES – Unable to find a buyer, De Beers Canada has decided to go forward with putting the Snap Lake diamond mine on extended care and maintenance. In effect, this means flooding the underground mine.
De Beers said the flooding will take approximately six to eight weeks to complete. On the surface, environmental monitoring will continue. The company plans to take advantage of the 2017 winter road to remove some equipment and bring fuel supplies to the site.
The decision to suspend mining at Snap Lake was made in December 2015.
