ARGENTINA –
Barrick Gold of Toronto announced a temporary shutdown at its Veladero gold mine pending detailed examination of the heap leach area. A pipe carrying process solution was damaged by a large piece of ice that rolled down the heap leach valley slope on Sept. 8, 2016.
The company assured the public that only a small quantity of solution leaked from the pad, but did not pose any threat to the health of employees, communities or the environment. Monitoring of surface and sub-surface water has been intensified, but no anomalies were reported. The impacted area has been remediated.
