WINNIPEG – The 73
rd annual conference of federal, provincial and territorial energy and mines ministers has concluded with renewed commitment to collaborate on the industries’ priorities in the coming year. The theme of the conference – enhancing public confidence in Canada’s natural resource sector – underscored the need to ensure that economic growth and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
The ministers discussed the Canadian government’s review of the federal environment and regulatory processes. They are determined that the review process ensures that provincial and territorial concerns are reflected in the review process. They recognized that engagement with indigenous peoples must be improved and that collaboration in the development of clean technologies can encourage growth in the minerals and energy sectors across Canada.
To support public confidence, ministers agreed to build on the work of the past year and develop a joint action plan that includes a common narrative and is based on these principles:
- Foster relationships and partnerships through early and sustained engagement and collaboration;
- Improve the communication and transparency of data and regulatory processes;
- Balance community interests and mitigate environmental and health impacts through regulation and legislation; and
- Support science and innovation to inform decisions and enhance environmental performance.
