NORTHWEST TERRITORIES –
De Beers Canada of is making plans to flood its Snap Lake diamond project where mining was suspended in December 2015. The Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board has reviewed the company’s plans and given its nod of approval to De Beers’ extended care and maintenance plans.
By allowing the mine to flood, De Beers says it will save money and reduce environmental risk at the site. Remote water monitoring may be necessary. Meanwhile, the diamonds will remain in the ground until market conditions make mining at Snap Lake economically feasible.
