BOTSWANA – In November 2015, Vancouver-based Lucara Diamond Corp. announced that it had recovered a 1,111-ct diamond – the second largest ever found in the world – from its Karowe mine. To name it, the company held a contest for citizens of Botswana that attracted more than 11,000 entries. The winning entry is “Lesedi La Rona”, meaning “our light”. It was submitted by Thembani Moitihobogi who wins a monetary prize. William Lamb, Lucara CEO and president commented, "The outpouring of pride and patriotism shown by all the participants in the contest was incredible. The diamond industry has played a vital role in the country's development, allowing for significant and ongoing investment in world-class healthcare, education and infrastructure. Lesedi La Rona symbolizes the pride and history of the people of Botswana." Photos of Lesedi La Rona are available at LucaraDiamond.com.
