Think you can write a new algorithm to classify gold ore? Certainly there is a CMJ reader up to the task. That's the challenge of the Gold Fields Ore-X innovation challenge that carries a first prize of Aus$10,000. (Second prize if Aus$1,500 and third prize is Aus$500.)
Whether you are either an established expert, or a professional who is trying to get a break in the consulting world, this will be of interest to you. Unearthed Solutions has teamed up with Gold Fields and GlassTerra to open a unique online challenge for mining innovators.
The goal is to develop an image algorithm that can classify material in a gold mine as high, medium or low grade ore, or waste. Not an easy challenge, but one worth solving. The winner will receive Aus$10,000 and must assign a perpetual non-exclusive royalty free license to Gold Fields, for Gold Fields’ internal use only. The developer will continue to own the algorithm, and is free to do whatever he/she like with it, including selling it to others.
The Ore-X challenge is now open for registration and data download. All you need to do is visit portal.unearthed.solutions for full details. Registrants will receive a dataset approximately 1.2 G in size, containing 218 images each approximately 12 megapixels.
Entries must be received between Aug. 25 and Sept. 25, 2015. Winner will be announced Oct. 9, 2015.
