OTTAWA – MEND (Mining Environment Neutral Drainage) has released a new report aimed at tailings management in the Canadian Arctic. Report No. 1.61.5c, Cold Regions Cover System Design Technical Guidance Document (July 2012), covers theory, alternative covers, cover designs and more for the north.
The report is timely in that the AANDC (Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada) Northern Contaminated Site Program (NCSP) will be remediating cover systems at some contaminated tailings sites on Crown land within the next two years.
Other groups, such as regulatory agencies, Aboriginal peoples, and non-governmental organizations, may find this document of assistance during their review of a proposed design, according to MEND. It is intended to be a resource for guiding cover system designers in evaluating a wide range of possible solutions.
Download the report from the MEND-NEDEM website. In it planners will find a wealth of technical information.
