ONTARIO – SNC-Lavalin of Montreal has been awarded the project management, engineering, procurement and construction management contract for Vale’s $2-billion Clean AER project in Sudbury. Construction is to begin in April 2012 and be complete by the end of 2015.
SNC-Lavalin will manage the retrofit and modernization of Vale’s nickel smelter complex to reduce its sulphur dioxide emissions by 70%. Dust and metal emissions will also be cut by 40% from current levels. All of the work will be carried out without interrupting production at the smelter.
