NEWFOUNDLAND - The federal government is to make over $2 million in infrastructure improvements at the Wabush airport. Improvements include a $1.7-million roof restoration for the terminal and maintenance buildings. It is to be completed in the next few weeks. Parking at the south terminal building will also be improved. That contract, worth $436,000, has been awarded to H.J. O'Connell Construction.
"Given the expansion of the mining and exploration industries in western Labrador, keeping this airport in top shape is vital," stated the Hon. Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the regions of Quebec. "This investment demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the Wabush airport, it will make sure it continues to meet the needs of the people and businesses of Western Labrador for years to come."
The Wabush airport is located in the southwest corner of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is owned and operated by Transport Canada. The principal communities served by the airport are Wabush and Labrador City, NL, and Fermont, QC. Four airlines have regular flights in and out of Wabush.
The airport's website, www.WabushAirport.com, includes flight arrival and departure information as well as other useful material.
