NUNAVUT - Starfield Resources of Montreal has asked SGS Lakefield Research to develop a hydrometallurgical process for recovering metal from the massive sulphide ore of its Ferguson Lake copper-nickel-cobalt project within the Hearne Domain of the Churchill Province. The technology could may also be applicable to the company's Stillwater project in Montana.
Lab-scale tests have been completed, and Starfield says the next step will be to demonstrate that the key processes of the technology will work on its ores using commercially available equipment. SGS will perfect the oxidation and hydrolysis process steps with a synthetic solution, said Starfield, then a 100-km sample from Ferguson Lake will be processed.
According to Starfield's website, the Ferguson Lake massive sulphide mineralization is hosted by an Archean east-west trending, possibly structurally controlled, hornblendite horizon having graditional contacts with the surrounding hornblende diorite, which has often been termed amphibolite. Together these rocks, which have been named the Ferguson Lake Intrusive Complex, represent a multiply deformed, possibly structurally controlled multiphase, differentiated mafic intrusive.
