QUEENSLAND, Australia — Researchers at the CRCMining centre have developed a "smart" baseball cap that monitors fatigue among operators of heavy equipment. The goal is to reduce the dangerous incidents caused by tired drivers of haulage trucks, loaders or shovels.
A number of sensors that measure brainwave information through hair are built into the SmartCap. That information is used in an independently validated formula to identify when the wearer is experiencing symptoms of fatigue. A warning message is sent to an in-cab display, alerting the operator of the need to stop and rest.
The SmartCap is being taken to commercialization with financing from the Australian Coal Association.
CRC Mining (www.CRCMining.com.au) is a multi-million dollar research centre established by the Australian government under the Co-operative Research Centres program. The centre is also supported by four universities and 14 industry partners.
