ALBERTA — Imperial Oil of Calgary has approved the $8-billion first phase of the Kearl oil sands project 70 km northeast of Fort McMurray. The project will be developed in three phases to an ultimate capacity of 300,000 bbl/day bitumen. The first phase is to be complete in late 2012 with a capacity of 110,000 bbl/day.
Construction at Kearl will include preparation of a surface mine with truck-and-shovel equipment, crushing facilities, and a hydrotransport facilities. Current plans do not include an upgrader on site. See also the April 2009 issue of CMJ for more details.
