The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) has released the 1999 Environmental Progress Report, its fifth annual such report. A new feature this year is a reporting on the Canadian mining industry’s recycling efforts: the results, which are incomplete, include recycling of over 27,000 tonnes of scrap metal, steel, copper and aluminum, over 4,500 m3 of waste oil and almost 12,000 tires.

In addition the report now includes the latest data on the releases of major ARET-listed substances such as arsenic, mercury and hydrogen sulphide. These results show a 16% improvement achieved in 1998 over 1997, and a 73% reduction over 1988, the base year. Member companies are on track to meet or exceed the original target of 50% reduction by 2000.

Eli I. Robinsky has written and recently published a technical book entitled Thickened Tailings Disposal in the Mining Industry. The author is professor emeritus in the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Toronto, and was the originator of the thickened tailings disposal (TTD) system, which he created for the Kidd Creek mine in Timmins, Ont., in the 1960s. Based on his extensive experience, this book provides complete coverage of the theory and practice of TTD for mine tailings wastes. It describes the significant economic features and environmental advantages. The writing style is quite readable, and the book contains numerous graphs, tables, illustrations and photographs.
