FORT McMURRAY, Alberta Readers with plans to be in northern Alberta on Thursday, June 19, should attend the official opening of the ATHABASCA OIL SANDS PROJECT. The celebration will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the Muskeg River mine. It will include a brief tour of the site, photo opportunities, and the chance to speak with representatives from Shell Canada, the Royal Dutch/Shell Group, ChevronTexaco, Western Oil Sands, and politicians from the federal and provincial government. The ceremony for the Scotford Upgrade at Fort Saskatchewan will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. the same day.
With the recent start-up of the Train 2 froth treatment facilities at Muskeg River, the project is now fully operational. It was hit by a fire in Train 1 shortly after production began last November, but that is behind them and the future looks good. The focus is now on ramping up production to 155,000 bbl of bitumen daily, probably by the end of the third quarter of 2003. The Scotford Upgrader has been making synthetic crude products from Muskeg River bitumen since April 19, 2003. At full production, the project will supply the equivalent of 20% of Canada's petroleum needs.
For further information about the official opening, to RSVP or make travel arrangements call Alison Pidskalny at Weber Shandwick in Calgary, telephone (403) 294-9592.
