Reserves at the Niobec mine at St-Honor-de-Chicoutimi, Que., have been increased 21% during 2002. Proven and probable reserves now stand at 22 million tonnes averaging 0.67% niobium oxide (Nb2O5), compared with 18.2 million tonnes at 0.68% Nb2O5 at the end of 2001. The reserve figures were increased after additional drilling, reducing production costs, and improving recovery after an independent rock mechanics study. About 90% of the new reserves lie above the 1,450-ft level and can be accessed from the existing underground mine.
The Niobec mine has also earned ISO 14001 certification for environmental management. It was previously ISO 9002-certified for quality control standards.
Niobec is owned 50% by Cambior and 50% by Mazarin, which is also the operator. For more information on the mine, visit www.cambior.com
