CHETWYND, British Columbia PINE VALLEY MINING hopes to begin construction at the Willow Creek coal project in Peace River District later this summer or fall. By December 2003, it wants to establish a low-volatile pulverized coal injection (PCI) plant with an output of 1 million tonnes/year.

The Willow Creek project is predicated on a proven coal reserve of 15 million tonnes with a strip ratio of 3.6 bank cubic metres to 1 tonne of raw coal.

Pine Valley already has a positive feasibility study, project approval certificate and a provincial mine permit in hand. The exact timing of development depends on financing. Pine Valley estimates it needs $22 million both to buy out the one-third share of partner MITSUI MATSUSHIMA CANADA and to initiate construction. Bids have been tendered for companies interested in building the facilities and possible contract mining.

The company has also applied for additional exploration licences to bring the total project area to about 13,000 hectares. Pine Valley can then consider mining the Pine Pass, Fisher Creek and Crassier Creek resources, all of which lie within trucking distance to the proposed Willow Creek wash plant. Mining these deposits could double or perhaps triple annual output, and a feasibility study will be initiated on the possibilities.
