Elgin Wolfe has resigned his post as chairman of VENCAN GOLD, and Bryan Wilson has succeeded him. Wilson was formerly president, and that post has been filled by Frank C. Smeenk.
BARRICK GOLD has appointed British-born Peter J. Kinver its new executive VP of operations, effective Sept. 9, 2003. Most recently, Kinver was director of the Western Division for Anglo American Platinum in South Africa. There he was in charge of one of the world's largest platinum operations. Prior to that Kinver was managing director of West African Operations in Mali of Randgold & Exploration. Earlier in his career, he worked for Ashanti Gold, Oman State Mining Co. and Goldfields, at mining operations in Ghana, Oman, England, and Namibia. Kinver is a 1976 graduate of the Royal School of Mines in London, U.K.
Also at Toronto-based BARRICK GOLD Lawrence J. Parnell has been named senior VP of communications and investor relations. He comes to the job from a position as director of global public relations for Ernst & Young, LLP in New York City.
NEWMONT MINING CORP. of Denver, Colo., has appointed Stephen Enders to the position of VP of worldwide exploration, effective Sept. 1, 2003. He was most recently president of Phelps Dodge Exploration. Enders holds a doctorate and a masters degree in geology-related disciplines from the University of Arizona. He did his undergraduate work at the Colorado School of Mines.
QUEENSTAKE RESOURCES, a Canadian company headquartered in Denver, Colo., has promoted and hired new personnel to address the needs, challenges and opportunities created by the overnight growth experienced as a result of its recent acquisition of the Jerritt Canyon gold mine. Dorian (Dusty) Nicol is now executive VP and director of exploration; he was Queenstake's VP of exploration. John F. (Jack) Engele is the new VP of finance and CFO; he formerly worked for Vista Gold and Echo Bay Mines. Colin F. Smith has joined Queenstake as VP of operations; he has 40 years of experience at Rio Tinto, Murray & Roberts Group, Anglo American, and as an independent consultant. Nigel Bain has been promoted from underground manager to general manager of the Jerritt Canyon mine in Nevada. The new general manager of the Magistral project in Mexico is John E. Rice. Dean T. (Ted) Wilton has left the Fort Knox gold mine in Alaska to become Queenstake's district geologist and will be based in Elko, Nev. John R. Haigh is the new manager of investor relations, and Gordon Gutrath, who founded Queenstake, has retired from its board of directors.
Vancouver-based GREAT BASIN GOLD has appointed Sipho Nkosi and Robert Still to its board of directors. Nkosi is also the founder and CEO of Eyesizwe Coal, a Black Economic Enterprise as established by law in South Africa. Still is CEO of Southern Mining, another South African company.
Jonathan Goodman has been appointed to the TAHERA board of directors. He holds a geological engineering degree from the Colorado School of Mines and a MBA from the University of Toronto. He is currently president and CEO of Dundee Precious Metals.
RIO NARCEA GOLD MINES of Toronto has created a new international business development division and named Robert van Doorn as executive VP to lead it. He is both a mining engineer and holder of an MBA degree.
There is a new board member at ROBEX RESOURCES of Ste-Foy, Que. He is Florent Baril, previously head of Bumigeme, which conducted the feasibility study of Robex's La Corne property in Mali.
ROMARCO MINERALS of Vancouver has appointed Robert M. Hatch as its new exploration manager in the United States. Of particular interest is the Hog Ranch gold-silver project in Nevada. Romarco can earn a 60-65% interest.
Winnipeg's KING'S BAY GOLD has appointed Ray Prefontaine to its board. He is a senior management professional with over 15 years of experience in the financial services industry.
LALO VENTURES of Vancouver has named Klaus Eckhof its new president and a director of the company. Former-president James Borkowski has resigned.
Dr. Trygve Hoy has been contracted to act as a consultant on BARKER MINERALS' gold and massive sulphide projects in the Cariboo Mining District of British Columbia. He brings to the job a wealth of experience gained during a 28-year career as a project geologist for the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines.
