process to open the first metal mine in Alberta. Operations could begin at the Burmis project as early as 2004.
Micrex (www.micrex.net) is an Edmonton-based company which acquired the property in July 1997. The estimated resource is 14 million tonnes of magnetite ore. The property also has the potential for by-product titanium recovery from tailings.
Magnetite slurry is used in heavy media circuits in coal wash plants. With so many coal producers in southeastern British Columbia and Alberta, Micrex believes it can supply heavy media at much less cost to these producers than they currently pay to import magnetite slurry from the United States. The western Canadian market for magnetite is estimated to be 80,000 tonnes/year.
INTERNATIONAL METALLURGICAL AND ENVIRONMENT INC. (IME) of Kelowna, B.C., has been retained for construction and management engineering. A contractor will be engaged to mine the ore, and IME will operate the 1,500 tonnes/day plant.
