RANKIN INLET, Nunavut Drilling at the Meliadine East project, a 50-50 joint venture of CUMBERLAND RESOURCES (the operator) and COMAPLEX MINERALS, has intersected its first kimberlite pipe in the region. Cumberland has been hot on the area after discovering the Meadowbank gold deposit to the west.
The Meliadine East drill core is described in a press release as kimberlite and breccia with a kimberlite matrix. The kimberlite and matrix are fine-grained and dark grey, containing olivine as fine grains and macrocrystals. The breccia contains xenoliths of metasediments from the Archean Rankin Inlet Group.
Drilling at the property this year will concentrate on 11 targets identified by previous airborne geophysical surveys and last year's till samples.
