PEACE RIVER, Alta. Drilling by PURE GOLD MINERALS has unearthed the 37th kimberlite pipe on the Buffalo Hills property in north-central Alberta. The first target drilling during this winter's program had returned 5 m of highly altered kimberlite by Jan. 29 and was still going. The kimberlite is overlain by 30 m of glacial overburden and 24 m of mudstone.
Buffalo Hills is a joint venture of Pure Gold (10% and operator, www.puregold.ca), ASHTON MINING OF CANADA (45%, www.ashton.ca) and ENCANADA CORP. (45%, www.encana.com). Since 1997 the joint venture has spent over $25 million on diamond exploration throughout northern Alberta. A 22.8-t bulk sample from the K-252 kimberlite, discovered in the fall of 2000, returned 12.54 ct or 55.0 ct/t. The largest diamond weighed 0.94 ct. Pure Gold's latest drillhole, called K-296, is located 18 km southwest of K-252.
